An Indigo Dyed Cotton Boro Fragment: Variegated Cottons
ca. late nineteenth century
73" x 13", 185.5 cm x 33 cm
This is a very good looking length of indigo dyed cotton boro cloth which was taken from a futon cover.
The length can be divided into two zones, the top part which is deeply piece dyed indigo cotton, thick with layers and patches, and the bottom part which is woven from white and indigo dyed yarns which yields a medium-range tonal quality. In places this bottom section is threadbare and there is a tear to the bottom area, shown in the accompanying photographs.
It appears that both bottom and top may once have been part of old, boro clothing before the clothing was deconstructed in order to make a futon cover, from which this piece was culled.
An old piece of hand woven cotton boro, this is an attractive length of cloth.
Lovely.
