An Indigo Dyed Boro Length: Lightweight Tattered Cotton
early twentieth century
76" x 12 1/2", 193 cm x 31.75 cm
This is a length of lightweight, indigo dyed cottons that have been worn hard and stitched together: the blue colors of the base cloth and the overlaid patches are beautifully gradient within a narrow spectrum of hues.
The base cloth is delicately thin from wear and is somehow mottled in tone. The applied patches are also of lightweight cotton and seem to swiftly stitched to the base: one of the patches is not entirely stitched down. Note the fairly prominent hole to the center, right-hand side of the cloth; as well, and as cannot be seen on photos, there is a length of about 1' or 30 cm where the cloth is split away near the selvedge, right hand side.
All in all this is a subtle and attractive length of supple cotton boro cloth--with some care, this could even be worn as a scarf, if you are so inclined.
