An Indigo Dyed Boro Fragment: #2
early to mid twentieth century
27 1/4" x 14 1/2", 69 cm x 37 cm
This fragment of lightweight, faded, patched, indigo dyed cotton was cut from a larger piece, presumably a futon cover or perhaps the lining of a yogi which is a kimono shaped duvet.
The patching is charming in its placement on the cloth and the color of the patches is beautiful, especially in its relation to the tonal quality of the ground.
This fragment shows old Japanese mending and patching in its true form, the bonus to be had from this piece is that it is visually cohesive and has a great deal of charm.
It is a humble yet very attractive fragment of patched cloth that begs to be displayed and appreciated for its own sake.
