An Eye Dazzling Yamatogasuri Cotton Kimono: Special Kasuri Weave from Nara

$595.00 USD

nineteenth century
shoulder to hem x sleeve tip to sleeve tip: 53" x 48", 134.5 cm x 122 cm

This is an absolutely beautiful kimono that is hand woven from hand spun cotton yarns.

It is dyed in the kasuri technique--and in this case the kasuri is a distinctive type from Nara prefecture. It is referred to as Yamatogasuri.

The photos here fail to capture the subtlety of tones woven into this cloth which makes the fabric have a kind of pulsating or shimmering effect. The pattern is based on the traditional well crib design and as you can see the pattern fades dark to light in ordered and alternate progression.

The kimono is in nearly perfect or unused condition and is devoid of any flaws from use.

It is a beauty, a stunning example of Yamatogasuri, and one that has massive appeal, not just in the visual sense but also for its age and splendid condition.

Very recommended.
