An Extremely Good Boro Hemp Length: Many Rustic Patches

$165.00 USD

ca. early twentieth century
55" x 12 1/2", 165 cm x 31.5 cm

This is a gorgeous length of old, boro hemp cloth which has been mended with nine beautifully arranged hand stitched patches.

The woven hemp is rustic, textural and rich in patina and wear--and the placement of the patches down its length is simply gorgeous, as are the stitches which hold the patches to the cloth.

This is panel taken from a futon cover, the original futon cover must have belonged to a poor family and may not have been stuffed with cotton, as is often the case in impoverished homes.  Families who could not afford cotton wadding would fill their futons with any manner of stuffing, whether it be rice straw, paper, hemp waste fiber (okuso) or other kinds of padding.

In our estimation this boro panel is fantastically good.  Please enjoy looking at the accompanying photographs.

Very recommended.
