An Extra Long Bolt of Hand Woven Cotton Yamato Gasuri: 23 yards or 21 m

$495.00 USD

early to mid twentieth century
23 yards x 13 1/2", 21 m x 34 cm

This is a rather remarkable thing, it is a full bolt which is twice the length of a typical bolt of cloth--and it is the marvelously distinctive cotton kasuri cloth from Nara which is known as Yamato gasuri.

Yamato gasuri is woven in countless variations that show great differences in scale, tone and design. This particular type of kasuri weaving shows a repeat design based on a grid which serves as a background for 9 block diamonds and softly-toned images of a plum blossom which alternate in rows along the length of the bolt.

As can be seen on the accompanying detail photos the end of the bolt shows stamps imprinted onto the cloth by the maker: this is always a desirable aspect when assessing a full bolt of cloth.

Its remarkably long length holds countless possibilities for any maker, artist or designer and as the bolt was never used and is in very good condition throughout there is a rich amount of material to be applied to any use.

Recommended--a fantastically good thing.
