An Expertly and Beautifully Hand Embroidered Indian Bag: Rajasthan

$125.00 USD

ca. mid twentieth century
14" x 9 1/4", 35.5 cm x 23.5 cm

What a stunningly good Rajasthani embroidered bag and one that is in fantastically good condition: please look very carefully at the detail photos that accompany this post to see the fabulously regular stitching that covers the entire surface of the bag and which is done with total control and expertise.

The bag is a square of layered cotton fabric that has been fashioned into a slightly off-center envelope shape.  If laid flat, you can see that the embroidered pattern (using the counted thread embroidery technique) is one of gently tiered and variegated diamonds which are set within a centrally placed "X" which is of the most perfectly detailed stitching imaginable.

On one-half of the bag, in two of the four segments delineated by the large "X" there is a studding of small mirrors.

The colors are rich and saturated and are mostly madder, green, blue, white and orange.  There is a pompom affixed to each of the two bottom corners of the bag.

This is an absolutely beautiful example of folk embroidery from Rajasthan, and one that is as attractive as it is expertly made.
