An Accordion Style Cotton Fabric Sampler: 44 Designs
early twentieth century
when closed: 10" x 5 1/4", 25.5 cm x 13.5 cm
This heavy paper accordion style book contains 44 samples of cotton cloth that are dyed in complex, botanically-inspired patterns.
The designs were probably meant to be used on yukata or a casual, unlined cotton kimono and this book was a selling tool of the manufacturer or a broker.
The many patterns are layered and most show a few different tones of dye that were used in the process of creating the design.
The heavy paper shows yellowing from age and the glued-on cloth samples show some foxing.
This is a really marvelous thing to look at and certainly is a rich study tool, too, as well as an inspiration for creative people.
