An Accordion Bound Sample Book: Kasuri
early to mid twentieth century
when closed: 10 1/4" x 5 1/4", 26 cm x 13.25 cm
33 swatches/ 2 missing
This is a really charming old book of kasuri dyed cotton samples, 33 in total.
The book is an accordion-pleated folio which is made of lightweight cardboard that has been commercially printed. The center area which holds the 33 fabric swatches extends out in one, long, folded piece but it is glued to the center of the book.
It is protected by folio-style wrapping which, when opened, reveals a magnificently printed butterfly in flight surrounded by circles and gold-flecked blue and red swirls.
Two of the large swatches are missing
There is some wear to the folds of the folio, but otherwise this little gem--harder and harder to find in Japan--is in good condition and is still very stable. And is very fun to look at.
