An Absolutely Beautiful Length of Hand Woven Striped Cotton: Hand Spun
late nineteenth century
60" x 13 3/4", 12.5 cm x 35 cm
In collecting Japanese folk textiles one of the prime aspects to consider is the type of yarn the cloth is woven from: the most prized type of cotton is hand spun yarn, and this beautifully faded length of cotton stripes is hand woven from hand spun cotton yarns.
The design and the color of this piece marry beautifully with the texture of the hand spun cottons; the fading from use and age enhances the appeal of the length of cloth.
There is one small hole to the cotton, seen on the accompanying photographs, but otherwise this length is in good, used condition.
Simply beautiful and very evocative of life in old Japan.
