A Zabuton Cover: Hand Spun Cotton Katazome

$95.00 USD

late nineteenth, early twentieth century
23 3/4" x 24 1/2" x 60.25 cm x 62 cm

This is a cover for a zabuton, a traditional Japanese seating cushion.

It is hand stitched from beautiful hand spun, hand loomed cotton: as can be seen, the central panel of the zabuton cover is a panel of very nice katazome or stencil resist cotton, the pattern is buoyant and rich in tone from being dyed with blue, black and white.

Surrounding this fragment is a border and backing of indigo dyed hand spun, hand loomed cotton which is still in very good condition despite the zabuton being a hundred years old or more.

This is a really charming home textile from old Japan which could be easily stuffed to make a pillow or even easier to display as art. If this interests you and you would like a pair, one other is available so please email to inquire.
