A Wide Sakiori Obi: Rag Woven Kimono Sash in Muted Mottled Colors
mid twentieth century
122" x 8 1/2", 310 cm x 21.5 cm
This is a subtly colored and woven sakiori obi, or a rustic, traditional kimono sash that is woven using shredded cloth as its weft yarn.
The warp yarns on this obi are a white toned cotton which give the obi's overall color a softness of tone. The weft yarns are fed in stripes of a black, grey, pink and a purple color and in combination with the cream colored warp the woven effect is lovely and muted.
This handsome obi is in good, used condition and shows a faint crease down the center of the obi, as it was once folded it half when it was worn by its owner. There is some almost-impossible-to-see and very small bits of loss to two tiny areas near the selvedge, only noticeable when this is held against light.
A sophisticated, elegant folk textile.
