A Wide Pieced Shibori Diaper: Cramped Spiderwebs
mid twentieth century
25" x 18 1/2", 63.5 cm x 47 cm
This shibori dyed cloth measures, as shown as 25" or 63.5 cm in length, when in reality it is twice that since this is a length of cotton that has been stitched as a "tube," short end to short end.
It is stitched in the style of a traditional Japanese diaper and is dyed in the shibori method, the type of shibori shown here is called kumo or spiderweb, a type of "tie dye." As can be seen, the cloth is completely hand stitched and the indigo color is still very bright. What may not be evident from the photographs shown here is that the cotton is very clear white, too. A few small clusters of stains, shown in the accompanying detail photographs.
The cloth is hand stitched from 1 1/2 loom widths and the cloth is in good, used condition.
Really lovely.
