A Very Repaired, Patched and Mended Shibori Diaper: Layers
early to mid twentieth century
45" x 12 1/4", 114 cm x 31 cm
This is a tattered, layered and patched textile, the base of which is indigo dyed cotton shibori. The cloth was more than likely meant to be a diaper.
Almost the entire thing is covered in white colored cotton patching, some of the patches overlap on each other and there is some good mending stitching to be seen. There is a rather prominent hole or tear to the bottom, center of the cloth.
Rough and well-used, this is a true boro textile that has been preserved through the years by the constant application of patches and stitched mending.
A tough little cloth this one has big personality.
