A Very Patched Plaid Length: Threadbare Islands
early twentieth century
64" x 13", 162.5 cm x 33 cm
This is a wonderful boro panel: it is hand woven, harshly contrasting plaid cotton onto which about 9 or so patches have been hand stitched.
The cotton is old and is threadbare in areas which have given way to become holes, some pictured in the accompanying detail photos. As well, there is a slight bow to the left hand selvedge area of the length.
The patches look beautiful in the way they sit against the high-contrast woven background. The large, striped, kasuri woven patch sets off the area it occupies.
A super visually interesting length of boro taken from a futon cover, this piece has a high volume of graphic appeal and impact.
Just beautiful.
