A Very Patched Plaid Boro Panel: Cotton Futon Cover
ca. late nineteenth, early twentieth century
60" x 13 1/2", 152.5 cm x 34 cm
This length of boro cotton cloth is most likely taken from a futon cover. It shows unusual coloration, a kind of warm grey, large-scale check pattern.
It is a beautiful length of cloth for its graphic patterning, its wonderful color, and its 12 patches, which are hand stitched to the base cloth, adding visual interest and a rich texture.
The selvedges of this cloth, which were hidden from light, seem to suggest that the white passages may originally have been a pale blue, but this may not have been the case.
This is a very handsome piece of boro cloth which is made from hand loomed cotton.
