A Very Attractive Indigo Dyed Cotton Boro Panel: Hand Spun Yarn

$85.00 USD

late nineteenth century
78" x 13", 198 cm x 33 cm

Before on this webshop the term ito aji, or thread flavor, has been used to describe the desirable quality of old cloth, those whose hand spun cotton yarns are evident in the final, woven length.

This length of indigo dyed boro cloth is rich in ito aji as its cotton yarns are hand spun and simply gorgeous because of it.

The length is hand stitched from three separate pieces, and each is beautifully faded and patched.  The surface shows 15 patches in varying sizes, all of them indigo dyed blue in various stages of fading.

The subtlety of the variations of tone is beautiful and the visual effect of blue-on-blue is delicious.

A wonderful, old length of cloth; a real memory from old Japan.

Recommended.
