A Two Panel Shibori Mat: Large Scale
mid twentieth century
47 1/2" x 25", 120.75 cm x 63.5 cm
This is a very handsome, finished, two-panel, indigo dyed cotton shibori mat that shows a vigorous, large-scale pattern a kind of arashi shibori.
The cotton is quite heavy weight and the mat--perhaps a child's sleeping mat--is hand stitched from two panels, the short ends being hand finished. The indigo dye is dark and inky blue and the "white" areas of the cloth are not pure white at all: it was hard to capture their color on the accompanying photographs, but they are a lightly tinted blue, not a stark white.
The condition of this absolutely wonderful shibori piece is good, however the creases to the piece seem fairly ingrained, probably due to this cloth being stored for decades.
A simply marvelous piece of old shibori and one with a great visual presence.
