A Two Panel Length of Boro Cotton: Indigo Dyed Hand Spun Yarns
late nineteenth, early twentieth century
66" x 24 1/4", 167.5 cm x 62 cm
This two-panel, indigo dyed cotton boro textile was taken from a futon cover which was made from a recycled, hand spun, hand loomed cotton kimono which most likely dat3ed to the late nineteenth century.
The base cloth is just beautiful for is rich, hand woven texture which exemplifies a quality essential to good quality, old cotton cloth: the Japanese refer to this as ito aji or thread flavor, and this one has it in good measure.
The color and the subtle striped design of the cotton is also noteworthy.
Noteworthy as well is the patching, mending and stitching on this cloth which is subtle but in every way traditional and visually interesting.
Beautiful and with good age this is a handsome old boro textile of good quality.
