A Tsutsugaki Dyed Noren: Young Pines and Family Crest
early twentieth century
60" x 37 1/2", 152.5 cm x 95 cm
This is a three-panel, tsutsugaki dyed cotton noren which a kind of curtain or room divider which is hung in doorways.
This particular one is in very good condition as its cotton is bright and strong, the indigo tone is even and deep and the freehand drawing of the young pines and the family crest is clear.
The noren is hand stitched; the white stitching on the selvedge ends of each of the three panels which comprise the noren is a back stitch done by hand in white cotton thread.
The stylized image in the family crest at the top is cherry blossom which has been fitted into a beautifully abstract roundel.
This is a very handsome noren in good condition and one with excellent hand work.
