A Tsutsugaki Dyed Furoshiki: Hemp Leaf Motif, Pine, Plum and Family Crest
early twentieth century
42 1/2" x 34", 108 cm x 86.5 cm
This is a tsutsugaki dyed furoshiki, a furoshiki being a traditional square-shaped cloth that is used for covering, bundling, storing and hauling goods.
This particular one is decorated by hand-drawn, resist dyed images and motifs.
On the upper, left hand corner there is a wedge shape showing the asanoha or hemp leaf motif, an often-used Japanese design element. In the center, set on an angle, is a large family crest.
The bottom, right hand corner shows an image which is a combination of a pine tree and plum blossoms, two images that in Japan are laden with beneficial intentions.
The pine signifies a wish for longevity as well as good tidings for a happy marriage. The reason for this is that pine needles fall in pairs.
The plum blossom shows courage as the plum tree in Japan blooms very early, in winter, so its blooms often burst forth under ice.
The tstutsugaki drawing is assured and it is a bit attractively fuzzy. The furoshiki itself is in good, used condition with no terribly noticeable flaws.
A very good looking tsutsugaki furoshiki.
