A Three Panel Cotton Mosquito Netting Section: Patched
early to mid twentieth century
77" x 36", 195.5 cm x 91.5 cm
This is a three panel section from a cotton mosquito net. The green color is not a naturally-derived dye and it seems that the entire piece may have been over dyed at some point.
There are two types of cotton mesh cloth used to make this piece, stripe and solid. Four hand stitched patches are used to mend the piece and they are clustered on the center panel of the cloth.
On the second photo here you will see a V-shape stitched into the top of the cloth--this is because triangle-shaped pieces of cloth were used on the corners and centers of the outside, top parts of mosquito nets in order to reinforce them when they were hung and suspended over the family's sleeping area.
This good sized section from a translucent mosquito net has nice visual appeal and its few patches add greatly to it.
