A Thick Hand Made Mitten: Boro Clothing
early to mid twentieth century
9 1/2" x 8", 24 cm x 20 cm
This chunky, hand made, padded, heavy mitten is made from recycled cottons with a wrist banding of a kind of silky material in a pale coral color--this silky material is also the lining of this mitten.
The padding is fairly heavy and the construction of the glove seems to be mostly hand stitched. There are some machine stitched details to the mitten done in white cotton thread and easily seen on the photos here.
A charming, utilitarian textile and one that tells much of country life in a Japan that still used traditional methods of garment construction based in re-purposing cloth.
