A Striped Sakiori Obi: Tri-colored Warp
mid twentieth century
104" x 5", 264 cm x 13 cm
This is a nicely colored and woven sakiori obi, or a traditional kimono sash that is woven using shredded cloth as its weft yarn.
The warp yarns on this obi are purplish, orange and white in color. The weft yarns--thin, shredded rags--are shades of red, white and black: the warp yarns are a powerful design element and they create stripes along the length of the obi.
This hand woven sakiori obi is in very good condition, with no visible holes or stains, and it is a very handsome example of a traditional, sakiori weaving.
An unusually colored, beautifully woven folk textile.
