A Stitched and Repaired Hand Carved Wooden Plate: Philippines
mid twentieth century
2" x 10 1/4" x 9 1/4", 5 cm x 26 cm x 23.5 cm
This slightly oval-shaped, shallow bowl or plate shows a lovely darksurface patina and two small areas of stitched mending, the stitching seems to be of some kind of plant material. Apparently this kind of repair is typical of the area of the Philippines where this bowl was made, although it is unclear which part of the Philippines this plate comes from.
The plate/ shallow bowl is hand hewn from one block of wood and tool marks can still be seen on its old and softly burnished surface. The wood is fairly lightweight and the subtle, hand-made character of this simple dish is just beautiful.
A simply beautiful object.
