This is a skein of rustic, hand spun, undyed cotton that had been coffered for probably more than a century which is why it has taken on the grey tone that it has.
You can see from the detail photos that this yarn is spun extremely unevenly which lends it some kind of country charm.
If you are patient it might be unraveled and used in a textile project or it can be used for study or decor.
A lovely reminder of how yarn was hand made last century this is an interesting object or artifact unto itself.
