A furoshiki is a traditional Japanese wrapping, hauling or storage cloth that is still very much used today.
This one is an older example and it is hand stitched from three pieces of indigo dyed cotton cloth which is hand woven.
The white sashiko stitched design elements--simple diagonals on each of the four corners--are beautifully spare in execution and aside from adding a decorative flourish to the furoshiki they also serve to strengthen the corners.
The center of the furoshiki is a bit distended from use and there is a hole, shown in photos, in the center.
The indigo dyed cotton is hand woven and the furoshiki embodies rustic charm.
Lovely.
