A Simply Designed Resist Dyed Hanten: Well Cover Design
early to mid twentieth century
35" x 49", 89 cm x 124.5 cm
This is an absolutely beautiful indigo dyed cotton happi or hanten which is a type of work coat that is emblazoned with graphic images related to the name of the business.
What makes this hanten so beautiful is the stark, resist-dyed design on the back of the coat, in this case it is a stylized well cover, an often seen Japanese design motif which here represents a family's crest.
The lapels on the front of the coat read Tachikawa yakuho which is the name of a pharmacy.
The jacket is entirely hand stitched and is in good, used condition.
A very good looking coat from old Japan.
