A Silk Drawstring Purse: Toggles and Thin Cording
ca. early twentieth century
8" x 9 3/4" x 4", 20.5 cm x 24.5 cm x 10 cm
This is an elegant, well-made thing. It is a silk purse which shows little wear, if any. Its form is simple and pouch-like; the narrow top closes using a thin, strong silken cord and two toggles which appear to be horn. When pulled tight, the narrow toggles cinch the top of the bag closed very securely.
What is not shown is the inside of the bag which is lined in a beautiful, old, bright blue checked silk fabric; upon closer inspection of the bag, you can see that each of the holes through which the drawstring passes is hand finished, much in the way a buttonhole would be.
This is a really lovely and still very functional bag, and one which still has a great deal of life. In good condition.
