A Short Nobori Bata: Iris or Sedge

$65.00 USD

early to mid twentieth century
66" x 12 1/2", 167.5 cm x 31.5 cm

This stately and symmetrically designed length of cloth is nobori bata.

A nobori bata is a decorative banner that is displayed on the occasion of boy's day, a celebration of boys and children.

These banners are often decorated with "masculine" subject matter such as depictions of historical scenes or of samurai which i
s a way of encouraging and emphasizing valor, nobility and other idealized masculine traits.

In this case we see sedge or iris which is allusion to swords, swords of course being associated with samurai and with courage and masculinity.

The designs shown on this banner were applied using a stencil. There is some mottling and ingrained dirt on the undyed areas of this cloth. As well there is a machine-sewn pocket at the top of this banner.

Charming.
