A Section of a Tsutsugaki Dyed Noren: Origami Crane

$115.00 USD

late nineteenth, early twentieth century
60" x 12", 152.5 cm x 30.5 cm

This is a length of hand spun, hand woven cotton that has been dyed in indigo in the tsutsugaki--or free hand paste resist--method.

It is one panel from a larger piece called a noren which is usually a dual paneled or multi-paneled door covering.

This particular slice of a noren shows a partial, large-scale origami crane that floats above a sprig of young pine, both images are symbols meant to convey a wish for long life.

The drawing is bold and sure and the surface of the cotton is a bit battered from wear: the image is still quite clear and the cotton still strong.

A wonderful piece of old tsutsugaki cotton and one that packs a graphic punch.

Just lovely.
