A zokin is a traditional Japanese dust cloth or cleaning rag; it is usually made from old pieces of cloth and it is usually layered and stitched for durability.
This particular cotton cloth may or may not have been intended to be a zokin but it certainly conforms to a zokin's general size and material components. It shows an all-over sashiko stitched surface in the persimmon flower or kaki no hana pattern which is often seen in sashiko.
As is shown on the photos here each side is stained, one more than the other.
