A Sashiko Stitched Small Mat or Large Zokin: Recycled White Flannel and Black Stitches
early twentieth century
15 1/4" x 15 3/4", 38.5 cm x 40 cm
This small mat or large zokin (a traditional dust rag) is made of re-purposed brushed cotton that has been sashiko stitched with black thread.
The sashiko stitching is done in a loose grid with a strong central diagonal line of stitching. As well, there is a patch and some frays, and on one side there is a small stain which can be seen on the accompanying detail photographs.
This layered, sashiko stitched textile shows a very nice tactility and some good looking and subtle mending details.
Its good size makes is usable in the home to display objects--or it can be admired on its own as a small piece of art.
Really lovely.
