A Sakiori Obi: Ragwoven Kimono Sash
mid twentieth century
128" x 6 7/8", 325 cm x 17.5 cm
This is an interestingly colored sakiori obi, or a traditional kimono sash that is made using shredded cloth as its weft yarn.
The cotton warp yarns on this obi are white in color and that said, they cast a pale tone over the entire obi.
The weft yarns--thin, shredded rags--are arranged to create a striped pattern: purplish-toned bands are the constant in the design while the paler toned areas vary in hue and are of super faint pinks, grey-greens and whites.
This hand woven sakiori obi is in used condition, with no visible holes or stains, and it is a very handsome example of a traditional, sakiori weaving.
It is an unusually colored, nicely woven folk textile.
