A Sakiori Obi of Rich Color: Rag Woven Kimono Sash
mid twentieth century
124" x 5 1/4", 315 cm x 13.5 cm
This is a nicely colored and woven sakiori obi, or a traditional kimono sash that is woven using shredded cloth as its weft yarn.
The warp yarns on this obi are several colors with black being predominate. The weft yarns--thin, shredded rags--are shades of richly colored, mottled tones set in blocks along the length of the obi. The black warp yarns mute the color of the weft fill and gives a deep color tone to obi.
This hand woven sakiori obi is in very good condition, with no visible holes or stains, and it is a very handsome example of a traditional, sakiori weaving.
A wonderfully colored, beautifully woven folk textile.
