A Sakiori Obi in Strong Colors: Rag Weaving

$95.00 USD

mid twentieth century
112" x 6", 2.84 m x 15 cm

This is a nicely colored and unusually patterned sakiori obi, or a traditional kimono sash that is woven using shredded cloth as its weft yarn. It is somewhat shorter in length than most sakiori obi of similar style.

The warp yarns on this obi are red, black and yellow in color.  The weft yarns--thin, shredded rags--are shades of purple and red.  The warp yarns give the obi the bold striped look that is so distinctive.

This hand woven sakiori obi is in very good condition, with no visible holes or stains, and it is a very handsome example of a traditional, sakiori weaving.

An unusually colored, beautifully woven folk textile.
