A Rustically Woven Obi: Checkerboard
early to mid twentieth century
120" x 6", 305 cm x 15.25 cm
This rustic obi gives the impression that it is sakiori or ragweave, but in actual fact is seems to be woven from a cotton warp with what appears to be a wool yarn weft.
As can be seen on the accompanying detail photos, the obi is woven in a checkerboard pattern rendered in purplish and pinkish tones. The weft yarns are thick, purplish colored strands of what appear to be wool and the warp yarns are pinkish and purple.
The overall visual result is a cheerful length of beautifully regular checkerboard in a nice color palette and a good arrangement.
The condition is good and used and there seems to be very little damage or wear to this piece.
Just lovely.
