A Rustically Woven Checkerboard Sakiori Obi: Rough Passages

$95.00 USD

mid twentieth century
106" x 7", 270 cm x 18 cm

This is a nicely colored and woven sakiori obi, or a traditional kimono sash that is woven using shredded cloth as its weft yarn. The checkerboard design is alluring.

It is photographed here in such a way as to show off the variation in weave and texture: both of these characteristics change along the length of the obi.

The weft yarns--thin, shredded rags--are varied in weight, color and material so as you unfurl this rag woven obi you will enjoy seeing that the obi has sections and areas that are distinct from one another.

This hand woven sakiori obi is in very good condition, with no visible holes or stains, and it is a very handsome example of a traditional, sakiori weaving.

An unusually colored, beautifully woven folk textile.
