Sakiori is a kind of traditional Japanese weaving that utilizes weft yarns of narrow, torn rags.

This is an obi, a traditional kimono sash that has been woven from white cotton warp yarns and has been fed with (mainly) purple colored cotton rag weft yarns.

Along the length is repeat of white, diamond/disk-like shapes which are inset using a tapestry weaving technique. As well, there are some green colored shapes on the right and left sides of the obi using the same weaving technique.

There is a notch-like tear to the obi shown in detail on the accompanying photographs; the tear seems fairly stable and because of the unusual nature of the weaving of this obi the tear is just incidental.

A lovely, vintage sakiori obi.
