A Repaired, Lightweight Cotton Muneate: Resist Dyed

$30.00 USD

late nineteenth century
16" x 11 3/4", 40.5 cm x 29.75 cm

This tattered, lightweight indigo dyed cotton object is called a muneate, which is a kind of apron/chest protector which was worn by samurai/fireman during the Edo period but was also worn by other trades as well. Because this one is of very thin cotton and is not backed or padded as most muneate are it is unclear who wore this one or why.

The muneate would have been worn under an overcoat as part of an elaborate costume or uniform.

This one is cut on the bottom, torn and repaired and it shows a good-sized hole on the family crest which placed centrally on the muneate. Stylized clouds sit above the crest.

A wonderfully graphic old garment which was resist dyed this tattered beauty must have seen marvelous things during its lifetime.
