A Really Beautiful Length of Indigo Dyed Plaid Cotton: Rich, Dark Tones

$75.00 USD

late nineteenth, early twentieth century
62" x 13", 157.5 cm x 33 cm

Plaids in Japan were abundant and there was an endless variety of types woven in all sorts of color tones and scales--from very small checks to large, window pane plaids.

A large scale plaid like this would have undoubtedly been used inside the home for bedding--this style of plaid would have been too "flashy" to be used by common people for garments.

This length is woven of deep, beautifully warm indigo toned cotton yarn which seem to be home spun. The cloth itself is certainly hand woven.

The design, although simple, is enriched by the beautiful choice of indigo colors and undyed yarns that were used to weave this length of sophisticated checked cloth.

Simple and richly beautiful.
