A Rare and Beautiful Drawstring Bag: Pieced Antique Katazome Cottons

$395.00 USD

late nineteenth century
10 1/2" x 14 1/2", 26.5 cm x 37 cm

This a drawstring that is composed of about twenty pieces of old katazome cotton, the katazome samples used to create this good-sized pouch are all of great quality and visual complexity.

The construction of the bag is flat, meaning the bottom panel is long and narrow which is why the bag is show as flat rather than as stuffed and as volume.

The bag is fully lined in hand spun, hand woven, cotton of a green color which is clearly indigo that is over dyed in a yellow dyestuff.

The pieces that were chosen to be highlighted on this bag are exceptionally good and rare pieces of old, multi-colored katazome. The closure of the bag is constructed from loops of stitches and the drawstring seems to be some kind of hemp or jute twine.

The bag seems not to have been used which makes it even more special.

It is a beautiful thing with good age and with spectacular fragments of old katazome.

Recommended.
