A Ragwoven Obi: Partial Length and Beautiful Colors
mid twentieth century
92" x 4 1/2", 254 cm x 11.5 cm
This is a richly multi-colored and woven sakiori obi, or a traditional kimono sash that is woven using shredded cloth as its weft yarn.
The obi was cut down from its original length so it is a slight bit shorter than most, probably by around 10" or 25 cm.
The warp yarns on this obi are black in color. The weft yarns--thin, shredded rags--are fairly evenly spaced bars in shades of several colors, some mottled.
This hand woven sakiori obi is in used condition and is a very handsome example of a traditional, sakiori weaving.
This is an elegantly colored, beautifully woven folk textile.
