A Plaid Sakiori Obi: Rustic Cotton Rag Woven Kimono Sash
early to mid twentieth century
114" x 8", 289.5 cm x 20.5 cm
This is a sakiori obi or a kimono sash that is hand woven from shredded cotton yarn. The warp is cotton and the weft is made of torn cotton pieces.
This obi shows a kind of "multi color" effect. The rag weft yarns alternate green, blue and red and the weft yarns alternate black and vermilion: the effect is kind of bright and cheerful. The side of the obi which is detailed here is richer in color than the reverse side which shows a bit of overall light fading from wear.
The obi is in good, used condition and its unusual rainbow-ish color palette makes for an interesting textile.
Beautiful.
