Zabuton are thin, square-shaped traditional Japanese cushions used to sit on the floor.  This is a sham or cover for a zabuton which traditionally would have been filled with cotton batting.  This one is ready to be filled.

This one is hand stitched of dull green, ochre and deep red colored plaid cotton and shows an almost indiscernible stain, pictured on the detail photo here.

A good-looking and still quite useful old utilitarian cloth.
