A Pieced Drawstring Bag of Omi Jofu: Hot Pink Inserts
early twentieth century
7" x 8" x 8", 18 cm x 20 cm x 20 cm
This beautifully designed, artfully made drawstring bag is hand stitched from hand loomed hemp or ramie cloth.
The dark blue-black figured cloth is Omi jofu, an extremely fine grade of hemp or ramie cloth made in Omi, present-day Shiga prefecture; the hot pink inserts that ring the bag are more than likely dyed in safflower or benibana as it is called in Japan.
The bottom of the kinchaku or bag shows a simple yet eye-catching arrangement of cloth arranged in four, big slices.
All the loop closures of the bag are intact and the orange cording seems original to the bag. It is lined in striped cotton cloth.
Really beautiful.
