A Pieced and Patched Collar Section: Scrappy Beauty
late nineteenth century
48" x 9 3/4", 122 cm x 25 cm
The full photo of this piece does not do it justice as when seen in person this pieced, narrow cloth is full of subtleties and charm not easily capture in photographs.
The narrow cloth is hand stitched from several strips of recycled cotton and it was more than likely taken from the collar piece of either a kimono or a yogi which is an oversized kimono-shaped duvet.
The detail photos indicate some of the texture and visual appeal of this boro cloth--and please do note about three holes, each seen on the various photos here.
Do not be daunted by the photographs, if there is some intrigue about this piece it will undoubtedly deliver more interest when seen in person.
A small, humble beauty.
