A Patched Tsutsugaki Dyed Panel: Hand Spun Indigo Dyed Cotton
late nineteenth century
49" x 26", 124.5 cm x 66 cm
This patched, recycled, two panel, indigo dyed cotton boro cloth is interesting on both of its sides, front and back. What adds to its beauty is the luscious texture that is given by the hand spun yarns that compose this cloth.
On the top, left we see a tsutsugaki dyed fragment of what appears to be a family crest. The indigo dyed, hand woven cotton shows a remarkably soulful patina from wear and in the detail photos that accompany this post this characteristic is made obvious for you to enjoy.
In some areas the cloth is almost threadbare, but it is the textural quality of it, the natural indigo color, the hand spun cotton yarns and the rich-yet-subtle patching that make this a desirable boro textile.
Equally beautiful on both its sides.
