A Patched, Open Weave Hemp Kaya: Mended Mosquito Netting
early twentieth century
72" x 13", 183 cm x 33 cm
This is a wonderful length of rustic, hemp cloth. This is a panel from a kaya, or mosquito netting, hence the very loose, open weave of the cloth.
The color is a warm green; the hemp yarns are wiry and have taken the dye in a slightly uneven fashion, which adds to the country appeal of this length.
The three applied patches add some graphic appeal to this good sized length, and it suggests aspects of its former life when in service of a family in old Japan .A lovely length of old kaya and one that is beautifully mended.
