A Patched Length of Katazome Cotton: Two Interesting Sides
late nineteenth, early twentieth century
74" x 13", 188 cm x 33 cm
This beautifully faded and oxidized length of old indigo dyed cotton katazome cloth is equally interesting on both its sides.
One the proper front side we see a delicate patterning of chrysanthemums, peonies (or some kind of fantasy flower) and arabesques. A patched hole is beautifully shaped and mended.
On the proper reverse side we see a ghost image from the katazome and another view onto that patch which is equally nice to see from this angle.
Of course there is some fading and some small, unobtrusive holes but the overall look and age of this piece is fantastic.
